Cumberland and Winslow actually ran the same number of routes (17 apiece), but Cumberland was used as a blocker 19 times (18 runs, one pass), where Winslow was used just three times as a run-blocker. Wilfork left Sunday nights game on the opening drive, and he didnt return. The Pats defense limited the Falcons for much of the game, though the D needed a red zone stand in the final minutes to secure the victory. The absence of Wilfork was manageable in that game, but Mayo said it would be hard to account for what a season-long absence would mean to the team.

Mayo hardly ever registers a sack because thats not his role in Bill Belichicks scheme, and never picks off a pass due to his hands of moved here stone. If the Patriots were trying to compensate for more of a playmaking linebackerlike Clay Matthewsthen Id be concerned. But theyre simply finding someone who can tackle. So, in essence, I guess I really am understating Mayos presence. Yes, Haynesworth hasnt been healthy very much in 2011, but he proved in the opening game of the season that when hes playing and motivated, hes still a very disruptive force in both the running and passing games. And Wilfork is playing as well ever, even leading the defense in interceptions so far in 2011 with two. Haynesworth and Wilfork causing chaos in the middle will make it that much easier for whomever plays middle linebacker in Mayos absence.

I think thats what its all about, is preparation during the week and those guys prepare well and they came in to the game and did some good things. Obviously we still have a lot of work to do and gelling together to get that chemistry but that comes with time. But last night was a good night for them. As for the possible return of Richard Seymour, dont expect No. 93 to be making a comeback to New England , as was reported on Monday. Clearly, Sunday night went beyond football for the Patriots. It was evident from the moment Tom Brady came over to check on Wilfork that his teammates felt for him. There was a game to be won but then after, their thoughts turned to the man who has anchored the middle of the line since 2004.
